A volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma began spewing lava again Monday after a lull, while hundreds of people in coastal villages hunkered down in anticipation of the lava emitted in previous days reaching the sea and releasing toxic gases.

Bursts of lava emerged from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on a sick day and some descended down the dark mountainside after hours without an explosion, according to Reuters witnesses.

The pause and explosion came just eight days after lava began flowing from the mountains of the island, which neighbors Tenerife in the Canary Islands archipelago off the coast of North Africa

On Monday, a prayer of scorching black lava covered a hill west of the small town of Todoque, less than a kilometer from the Atlantic, but certain parties said they could not confirm when it would reach the sea.

However, some 300 local residents in the coastal areas of San Borondon, Marina Alta and Baja and La Condesa have been confined to their homes because the moment of contact between the lava and the ocean is likely to trigger an explosion and release a cloud of chlorine gas.

Local airline Binter, which had planned to resume flights to and from the islands on Monday afternoon, said conditions were still unsafe and all transfers would be canceled until Tuesday.

After opening fresh on Sunday, Reuters drone footage showed rivers of hot lava cascading down slopes, past houses, and swaths of land and buildings being swallowed up by a slower-moving mass of old black lava.

While the red tongue of lava extended offshore, the volcano's two open pits continued to spew more magma from below.

Experts say it may not be too early to determine how long the eruption will last. Previous eruptions have lasted weeks, even months.
